Review: Batman, Under the Red Hood

null It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had a good animated Batman movie. Sure, we’ve had a quite a bit of them (Mask of the Phantasm, Sub-Zero, Return of the Joker, Mystery of the Batwoman, Gotham Knight), but none have quite surpassed the quality of Mask of the Phantasm. Now, Under the Red Hood has surpassed the champ.

As per Batman’s luck, he arrives too late to save the 2nd Robin (Jason Todd) from being killed by the Joker. Years later, a new threat has emerged on the crime scene known as the Red Hood. Originally the mask of Jack Napier before he became Joker, the new Red Hood is a cross between vigilante and mobster. Under his control, gangs and drug traffickers are kept somewhat in line. They don’t sell to kids, and anything the Red Hood says goes. This does not sit well with mob leader, Black Skull, who wages a war of power against him. And poor Batman is caught in the middle fighting both sides with the Joker thrown in for good measure. Read the rest of this entry →

Review: Toy Story 3

It’s hard to be objective with a movie like this. I grew up with Toy Story, and the movies meant so much to me. So to see a new movie with these familiar characters after over a decade of waiting, I was ecstatic. The good news is that once I took off the nostalgia goggles, it’s still a great movie. Heck, I’ll come right out and say it; Toy Story 3 may very well be the best movie of the Summer.

The remnants of Andy’s toys have grown lonely and depressed after years of no playtime. Woody, Buzz, Jesse, and the regulars try desperately to get his attention, but to no avail. When college time approaches fast, Andy must decide if the toys go with him, become stored in the attic, or go in the trash. A bunch of misunderstandings occur which leads to the toys seeking asylum at a daycare center, much to the chagrin of Woody who still believes that Andy loves his toys. The daycare turns out to be more of a prison than a community. The top toy, Lotso (a plush bear who smells like strawberries), dictates who is to be played with by the merciless toddlers who massacre toys to the point of destruction. From there, the movie turns into a prison escape movie which quickly escalates into a frightening fight for survival. Read the rest of this entry →

Review: Meet the Feebles

“Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the end of sex and violence on televisions!”

This was the first line uttered in the pilot episode for The Muppet Show. The show certainly made good on its promise by being a crazy variety show that never once relied on gruesome violence or sexual situations. Meet the Feebles takes the same concept of The Muppet Show, a variety show for the whole family, but turns everything behind the scenes into a raunchy drama. Sex and violence is only the tip of the iceberg for this saucy puppet show. Read the rest of this entry →

Review: Smash Cut

A few weeks ago, Media Blasters announced that they were going to start streaming some of their anime catalog online. The first titles to be a part of this service were Ah! My Goddess, Queen’s Blade, Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny, and Kanokon. While the concept of free legal anime streams is nice, what caught my attention was at the end of the press release, “SMASH CUT — watch the exclusive, intimate video diaries from adult superstar Sasha Grey on the set of this blood-splattered feature!” I like porn and I like slasher movies, so it follows that I should like a slasher movie starring a porn star, right? I needed to know the answer. After watching the trailer I did what any curious pervert would do and bumped Smash Cut to the top of my Netflix queue. Read the rest of this entry →

Review: The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie!

Every network has their black sheep that bites the hand that feeds them. Comedy Central’s Drawn Together not only bit, but tore off the hand, ate it, defecated it, and then ate the defecated hand. If that image doesn’t disturb you, then you are ready for the low-brow assault that is Drawn Together.

The show started out as a simple premise of eight typical cartoon stereotypes living together in a house mocking reality shows. The movie clearly establishes that the whole reality show gimmick is wore thin and is just an excuse for some messed up humor (like stomping cats to death). Choosing the meta route, the movie is about the show being cancelled and replaced with The Suck My Taint Show (a satire of South Park). As the cartoon characters soon discover that they are knock-offs of real cartoons, they seek to regain their show by going to Make-A-Point Land to make their show seem more topical than low-brow. At the same time, they are being chased by I.S.R.E.A.L. (Intelligent Smart Robot Animation Eraser Lady) whose mission is to erase the Drawn Together cast from existence.
