Contest: Create Your Own Devil Fruit, Win a One Piece Box Set

Hey One Piece fans,

I know you guys don’t get a lot of love here at fightbait.com, but I think you’re going to forgive me. With the help of Used Anime Store we’re giving away a 13 episode box set! It’s the official uncut Funimation release, Season Two First Voyage (54-66).

All you need to do is create your own Devil Fruit. Entries must include the following: name of the Devil Fruit, what powers it gives you, at least one piece of additional information like a special attack or weakness.

You can either email your entry to fightbait@gmail.com or leave a voice mail. Bonus points for creativity (e.g. draw a picture, write a short story). If you leave a voicemail be sure to leave your name.

Contest ends June 30, 2010. Winner will be announced on the first fightbait.com podcast (not Whiskey Thursday or UGUUU!) after the contest ends. Once the winner is announced they have two weeks to claim their prize and provide mailing information. If they fail to do so in time, the prize will be forfeited and given to the second best entry instead.

P.S. I’ve already gotten one entry, and it’s pretty damn good.

Site News: March Edition

Yoshiaki Kawajiri Month
For the month of March, each episode of the fightbait.com podcast will conclude with a “review” of something directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. With the exception of Ninja Scroll and Wicked City, the movies/OVAs haven’t been decided upon. We’ve got a lot of great titles to choose from, so it’s going to be difficult to narrow it down. I also intend to write an article about Kawajiri so the podcast can focus specifically on the movies.

Podcast
You may have noticed that there hasn’t been a podcast for a while. This is due to my being sick, Xan’s lack of electricity, and the fact that I’ve exhausted the Whiskey Thursday/UGUUU backlog. Xan and I have scheduled to record a podcast this Wednesday, which should be released early Thursday morning. As for Whiskey Thursday/UGUUU, we’ll see what happens. I can say that Kirran and I have something big planned, but we tend to record when inspiration strikes, so a date hasn’t been solidified. Read the rest of this entry →

Anime/Video Game Release Date Calendar

The other night as I was browsing the Internet I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a site that had the release dates for video games, anime, and manga all in one place?” While I wasn’t able to find a reliable source for manga releases, I did manage to aggregate dates for anime and games. I also put as many birthdays as I could find on the calendar–listeners, bloggers, Nicolas Cage, Kirran’s mom.

From now on, I’ll make a blog post every Tuesday with the major releases in anime and games. Birthday wishes will likely be taken care of on the podcast. I still would like to add manga to the calendar but I still need to find a convenient method of gathering the information. If anybody knows of a good site with release dates, it would be much appreciated if you let me in on the secret. I’m also considering adding the dates when new movies hit the box office. If you like that idea, let me know.

UPDATE: I just added box office releases for the month of February.

Dead Laptop, Podcast Delays, and Borders Closeout Sale

I regret to inform you that my laptop crapped out on me last night. My battery has been unable to hold a charge for longer than 30 minutes for months now. I should have done something when this first happened, but I didn’t care that much because it worked fine as long as I kept it plugged in. All was fine and dandy until my charger broke last night. I brought it to Best Buy to have it replaced but they told me I had to call “the hotline” to have the parts ordered because they don’t keep them in stock. Although it sucks not having a laptop, I still have my desktop to keep my busy. Unfortunatly, the podcasts that I was planning to release this week and the next are trapped on my laptop. I will release them as soon as I get a new battery/charger, but until then I have nothing. I’ll try to record something as soon as I can, but I’m not making promises on exact dates.

In the meantime, Borders is going out of business. While this is a sad thing to report there is still some good in the news. Great deals on manga (and other books too). I can’t speak for every Borders, but the one I went to last night had all manga marked 50% off. I picked up a volume of 20th Century Boys as well as the second Haruhi novel and the first Wicked City novel for less than 20 dollars. I know a lot of you kids love your scanlations, but light novel translations are a lot harder to come by. I can’t confirm this date, but the clerk said that she thinks the store will be closed for good by the end of the month.

UPDATE: I just did a quick Google search and found no evidence that ALL stores are closing down. There was no doubt that the store I went to was shutting down, but that was just one store in a crappy mall. I do know that the company has been having financial problems for some time now, so they might just be cutting back on the less profitable stores.
