Review: Transformers: War for Cybertron

I’m not really sure what I thought I was doing when I decided to pick up Transformers: War for Cybertron. Besides checking out a couple YouTube videos, I had no prior knowledge of the game. However, the videos did look promising, and I had some birthday money to spend, so I decided to take a chance.

I don’t know how many games are based on the Transformers series, and frankly, I don’t really care. They’re probably all bad anyway. How often are games based off of cartoons or movies good? Almost never. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case with this game. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s not a movie tie-in game that they rushed out to cash in on the buzz. Read the rest of this entry →

Review: Demon’s Souls

Demon’s Souls is a game that can make even the most die-hard Xbox fanboys question their brand loyalty. It’s a third-person RPG that takes place in a medieval kingdom where all the subjects have been possessed and the land overrun by demons. You play as one of many soldiers who has come to save the kingdom in hopes of gaining riches and celebrity status.

After the tutorial, the game places you in an over-world called the Nexus, which acts as a sort of home base and connects you to the other stages of the game. There are five worlds with 3-4 stages in each, and each world is unique with their own environments. My favorite world is this giant tower with various torture devices scattered about. It’s really eerie walking around in a dank dungeon with body shaped coffins full of nails that hide enemies within. Read the rest of this entry →

Final Fantasy IX: Disc One

Final Fantasy IX - A Place to Call Home

With the announcement of Final Fantasy IX being released on the PSN, I’ve been wanting to play through the game again. With the exception of last year when I helped Ellie beat Soulcage (the boss in the Iifa Tree), it had been nearly fours year since I’d played this gem of the Playstaion era. Review: Resident Evil 5 DLC/Gold Edition

Despite its faults, Resident Evil 5 is one of my favorite games in recent history. It’s essentially Resident Evil 4 with better graphics and co-op, and a lot of people were bothered by that. However, that’s exactly what I was looking for, so Resident Evil 5 ended up being the catalyst in my purchasing an Xbox 360.

I’ll be the first to admit that it wasn’t a perfect game, but between replaying the campaign with my roommate and grinding it out in Mercenaries mode, it’s definitely among the most played of my games. Because of this, the announcement of new missions and costume packs was very exciting.

With Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition coming out tomorrow, the question is this: If you haven’t already purchased Resident Evil 5, should you bother getting the Gold Edition. The answer of course is, “Yes.” Resident Evil 5 was already pretty damn good, and the Gold Edition is the same game, $10 cheaper, and has all the bonus content included.

But what is all this bonus content about anyway? Read the rest of this entry →

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

“Punk’s not…excuse me…Punx not dead.”

With the release of No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, Grasshopper Manufacture has returned to the fictional city of Santa Destroy, CA to continue the story of assassin Travis Touchdown. Having climbed the ranks in the original No More Heroes, Travis has left the United Assassins Association (UAA) and has spent the last three years wasting away in his room full of otaku delights, including an obese cat named Jeane, a vertically scrolling shooter that only offers one level of play and a short, loli-filled animation called Pure White Lover Bizarre Jelly 5 that contains many of the cliches of moe.

However, for some reason, despite the fact that he hasn’t fought for three years, Travis still carries a sub-standard beam katana just in case anyone tries to kill him, and this decision pays off when Travis crosses the path of Skelter Helter, the brother of Helter Skelter from the original game. Travis easily dispatches with Skelter Helter, and Sylvia lets him know that he’s now ranked 51st in the UAA. Read the rest of this entry →
