The bit about the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" is how the lyric implies that children in Africa don't have snow because they're too damn poor. Look at 'em... Nevermind not knowing about presents or carols or feasts...they're so impoverished that they can't afford snow!

An aside, but as to the part near the end doubting whether people like Hamdo exist, they are rare but they do exist. Joseph Kony (leader of the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda/Congo/South Sudan) is probably the best living example, but also Idi Amin (former dictator of Uganda) and some of the leaders of the Interahamwe during the Rwanda genocide as well. Now and Then, Here and There took influence from the events the latter were involved in, the director trying to explore and come to terms with how people could be so brutal.

I also spent around $160 on the first half of Eureka Seven, because the US special edition boxes and swag and STUFF was so sexy to me back then. I later chucked it all out because I didn't have any room for all that shit, had barely touched it, and I had to move cross-country and fuck lugging all that around. Plus my lust for "special editions" had waned because I realised I never looked at ANY of the extras.

Nowadays, my personal limit is £40 per 13 episodes. I don't really care about extras, but I do care about video/audio quality, the translation, and if the packaging is a) compact and b) doesn't look embarrassing to have on my damn shelf.
If something I want is released for more than that? Nope, don't care. I have enough of a media backlog that I can wait until either it goes on sale, appears for cheap and a con, or a thin-pak or budget release is made.

I think the most I would spend for one series would be $400 and that would only be for something really really special or if someone licensed and released Legend of the Galactic Heroes for North America and it was released on BD.

My most expensive anime is Durarara!! the entire collection cost me $120 but I love Durarara! so it was worth it.

However, that doesn't mean that I'm not reading ANN and watching what people talk about on Twitter. The frequency of K-ON! and Bakemonegatari mentions has settled down quite a bit. That doesn't everybody stopped caring. Just that the hype is over. There's also the fact that shows like K-ON! have a small but vocal (and crazy) fanbase.

My comment about High School of the Dead isn't without it's logic either. It has gore and tits. Those two things are a license to print money. Shows like that have proven to sell incredibly well. Gantz, for instance, was one of ADVs bestsellers. I love Gantz, but it's a terrible show. However, it has the golden formula. That's all I meant by High School of the Dead having staying power. And I'm pretty sure I said it had universal appeal, but I can't remember.

Interestingly enough, early on in the movie when Taylor is being cyber-bullied, another victim who is gay confesses to her about being called a faggot online. Taylor considers his situation 'not that bad' because she thought it made sense since he was gay. Clearly, this girl is not that smart when it comes to social issues.

Those being persecuted online for being homosexual, a different race or mourning the death of loved ones others do not feel for are very hard-hitting cases of real cyber-bullying that must be dealt with in a specific social context. But that is a whole other issue and what I'm focusing on is specifically kids calling Taylor names and spreading rumors. Honestly, kids really need to be more unplugged in establishing social relationships. If your 'friends' judge you exclusively by rumors that circulate online and would rather distance themselves than talk with you directly, they are not really your friends. As for the people harassing you, the only way you can stop the verbal abuse for good is to educate them into a mature state of mind. This cannot always be accomplished because there are those who simply can't be taught and will always be bigots and mean-spirited gossip queens. A government law is not going to convert these people nor will it make the social stigma just go away. There will always be somebody who hates you for being different.

If the movie had presented a much more in-depth study of how someone's entire life and personality was affected by cyber-bullying, it would make for a better after-school special showing the truly darker nature of the subject. But the picture being painted of cyber-bullying was that of rumors were spread and the girl deciding to off herself. Girls have spread rumors of being called sluts for eternity. The issue itself must be dealt with through social interaction away from the computer. As much as I hate that ending, Taylor's has the right idea in standing her ground in the school rather than online. I just wish it didn't involve the phoney in-prompt-to rally that ends with her getting the hunky guy who once joined in the name-calling.

Words only hurt as much as you let them. And, yes, some kids are too weak to bare the blows. But there are things they can do about it. If someone's comments are painful and hurtful, talk to someone about it. Ask for help from someone who has dealt with this sort of thing before. Attend group sessions. Or, if the bully is local, try finding out more about him/her and just why he/she is doing it. See if you can get their friends/family to talk to her. Inform your friends of the situation and band together so that you are not alone, defenseless and sensitive enough to when the smallest slur initiates a razor blade to the wrist. You have a multitude of options to consider before you decide to commit suicide, whore yourself out or try to convince the government of prosecuting said bully.

Kids are ten times more secure then they were years ago. We have special schools with sensitive learning environments, guards all over high schools, v-chip programming, culturally sensitive locations, youth-centered public facilities, specialized tutoring, harsher health guidelines for cafeteria food, safer playgrounds and stings for child predators. There is only so much that the world can do to protect teenagers from all it's dangers let alone the dangers of slander. At some point, you have to take responsibility and figure out how to defend yourself.

Seriously that etiquette is absurd. You should TRY to be there on time to take it out. You should REALLY try. But the worst case scenario should be that they take out your clothes and put it on top of the washer, not drape diarrhea-stained shorts on your bath towels.

I think guys have it easier too. As long as the dude giving you shit isn't 'roided out, you can easily get away with brinkmanship: "I heard you've been talking shit, bitch." If you make it seem like you're more than willing to fight over shit, they probably won't let it get to that level.

Don't mistake this sanitized bullshit for what actually goes down these days. There are cases in schools of systematic, sustained verbal abuse, especially of young adults on the LGBT spectrum. Being told by the entire student body--either directly or indirectly, through everyday use of homophobic slurs like "gay" and "fag" used pejoratively--that you are a despicable, worthless person on a daily basis is GOING TO FUCK YOUR HEAD UP. That is verbal abuse, that is bullying, and with the Internet around there is no escape from this short of completely not participating on the Internet at all. Which is increasingly impossible to accomplish in this day and age of plugged-in kids.

Also, let me tell you: being called "four-eyes" and "geek" is NOTHING next to a girl getting called a slut or a whore. That shit is fucking social stigma supreme--for one, she'll be shunned by the girls of her school, and it places her in even more danger for rape, since most dudely dudes in high school just assume that if a girl's labeled a slut, she'll be more than happy to put out. Not to mention that "slut" as a label for a girl who has and enjoys sex just reinforces the bullshit notion that women, intrinsically, cannot enjoy or desire sex. Note that the word for men who sleep around is "stud", which has a much more positive connotation, and that men are always praised when they have a large number of sexual "conquests". That's not a double standard at ALL.

I bet none of this was covered in that special; I didn't watch it. I'm sure it's as bad as you say it is, and I'm pretty sure I'd find it even worse. But don't conflate an over-simplified, saccharine, made-for-conservative-middle-class-women-and-their-daughters movie with the shit that's actually going on inside schools. It's a lot worse than you think.
