LOLI vs. is entertainment from a tween-age girl's point of view.
The rules are simple:
- If LOLI wins--It means the object of entertainment was crappy, thus not worth her time.
- If the opponent wins--It means that the object of entertainment is worth pursuing, even if you're a tween with limited money.
~So for a while I haven’t really watched anything that I would be willing to purchase, except K-On!! But everybody’s watching that. So I might actually be back to writing since my Summer break is here in a few days.~
This is a show about the power of singing. And giant robots. And aliens. And deculture. I’m talking about Macross Frontier. You may know it from it’s infamous “nyan nyan song,” or even as the debut of Megumi Nakajima, the voice of Megpoid GUMI. This series real claim to fame is it’s being the 25th anniversary series of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross, one of the greatest anime of all time. So, does Frontier live up to its predecessors?
At first glance, you could mistake this for a Sunrise production. The winning combination of robot fights and a plot involving characters that experience emotions other than hot-blooded rage is something along the lines of Escaflowne or Code Geass. I still can’t decide if this is a "real robot" or a super robot show, though.

One thing that will strike you immediately is the music, which makes senses because music plays a large role in the plot. The first opening (of about 5, even though it’s only 26 episodes) starts with May’n, Sheryl Nome’s singer, at the top of her range. After a few seconds, comes Nakajima’s smooth voice. This opening, Triangular, is beautifully animated, or at least it probably is. It's hard to tell because so much is going on in the opening animation, it ends up being pixilated and blurry.
Yoko Kanno did a brilliant job on the soundtrack. Nakajima, May’n, and Maaya Sakamoto each have beautiful vocals. Songs like Lion, Interstellar Flight, and Ai Oboete imasu ka are already famous in their own right, but within the show they're even better. The various shout outs to the original Macross, like Iteza Gogo Kuji Don’t Be Late and a redux of My Boyfriend is a Pilot among them, add an extra dimension to the show. I can not recommend this enough for to fans of the original Macross.
The animation was stellar. Ranka and Sheryl are animated so perfectly that it felt like the character were actually singing. And much of the voice acting was well done. Especially Bobby Margot’s voice actor, I couldn’t help but cry at the sheer awesome of his voice. Aya Hirano played someone in this, I don’t remember who, but it was pretty good, I guess. I don’t know, I love Aya Hirano with a burning passion.
I want this show to have an English adaptation so bad. I’ve already hired Christina Vee and Caitlin Glass in my head, and I want Vic Mignogna to play Bobby Margot. I can put a voice actor to anyone for this show. And remember, Ozma Lee is not an adult, HE’S A MAN.
Final thoughts: If you like giant robots, singing, Macross, gay guys, bishounens, aliens, time travelers, espers, boobies, beauty pageants, Linn Minmay, space, outerspace, flashbacks, or pretty much anything else that exists, this is the show for you. But If you like space soap operas, don’t kid yourself, you won’t find that. This is a space shampoo opera!
